Portrait Photography

I was recently approached by two photography students, Becca and Jake, who wished to improve their photographic skills and experience, particularly in relation to portrait photography. Becca, you may remember from a previous blog, she assisted me a couple of months ago with a wedding at Gosfield Hall.

I invited them around to my home studio, along with Becca’s brother, Elliott where we spent a few hours practicing different lighting, posing and shooting techniques. They both thoroughly enjoyed the session (as did I) and both said they had learned a lot from it. I plan to run some further training for them in the new year; meanwhile here are some of the shots that I took on the day.

Wedding photo shoot - Maidens Barn, Essex

I recently did a wedding photo shoot at Maidens Barn, a great wedding venue, near High Easter in Essex. The day was run by Braintree wedding photographer, Jeff Turnbull (www.jeffturnbull.com) and out models were Emma Pudney and Greg Ratcliff. (Who were both brilliant!)

Photo shoots are a great way for photographers to train. To develop their style and to stay up to date with current developments and trends within both the photographic and the wedding industry. Wedding at Gosfield Hall in Essex - Chris and Ashlea's Wedding

Chris and Ashlea are a truly delightful couple and they have two equally delightful children, Ben (aged 2) and Brook (aged just a few months). They recently got a unique opportunity to get married a Gosfield Hall which is an extremely impressive wedding venue, a Georgian manor house situated in the picturesque village of Gosfield in north Essex, which coincidently also happens to be where I live. (Gosfield that is – not the hall).

It was a beautiful day, not too hot, but with lots of sunshine and blue skies. Ashlea looked absolutely stunning in her wedding dress and Chris also looked very dapper in his morning tails.

They were a fantastic couple and were great to work with, as indeed were all of their guests. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and having a good time.

Engagement photo shoot

Although I have labelled this as an ‘engagement shoot’ it was actually photographed using two models (who were not actually getting engaged). However the style of posing and photography used easily represents that which could be used for an engagement shoot. It would also be ideal for a pre wedding shoot or a very stylish portrait shoot for a boyfriend and girlfriend, husband and wife, partners etc.

The images were all taken during a day spent with Jeff Turnbull (www.jeffturnbull.com) aimed at producing natural light environmental portraiture and all were taken around the Braintree area of Essex.

The two models are the very beautiful Beth, who was absolutely fantastic, I’m sure you will agree she looks stunning in all of her shots and her real life boyfriend, the very dashing Frazer.

I recently photographed the wedding of Sarah and Chris, both of Gosfield in Essex. They have been together about 15 years and have finally decided to ‘tie the knot’. They are a really nice friendly couple and I thoroughly enjoyed photographing the event. The wedding itself took place in Braintree Registry Office and the wedding reception was held at The Bull Hotel in Halstead.

Although the weather was a bit cold, wet and blustery on the day we still managed to get outside to take most of the photographs. Here is a selection from those taken on the day.

Olly Murs visits 'Brainwave' in Witham

I was recently asked to photograph X Factor runner up Olly Murs’ on a visit to the Brainwave Centre in his home town of Witham in Essex. Olly attended the centre with his agent, Sarah Thomas, and although they were a little late due to traffic problems this did not deter Olly’s enthusiasm to meet and mingle with the children, parents, families friends and staff. He took time to meet and chat to everyone and seemed to take a genuine interest in the work that was being done.

Brainwave offers home based therapy to children aged from 6 months -12 years of age who have Development Delay and disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Down’s Syndrome and Autism. After a two-day Initial Assessment the therapists devise a structured exercise therapy Programme to suit the individual needs of each child. They then show the parents how to do this therapy at home. Jo and James Wedding - Clare in Suffolk

For those of you that follow my blog you will know that I did a pre wedding shoot with Jo and James back in June, I said then what a fantastic couple they were. It was a great pleasure therefore to meet up again, to spend the day with them and photograph their very special wedding day.

They got married at The Bell Hotel in Clare, Suffolk. Which I have to say is a lovely venue, ideally suited for the smaller weddings. It was really cool to photograph Jo and her bridesmaids as they prepared themselves (all looked lovely) in the very fine ‘four poster’ bridal suite. I then photographed James and his best man Jamie as they ‘looked very dapper’ in and around the hotel before the ceremony itself got underway.

The weather that week had been a bit ‘iffy’ however on the day it’s self it looked as though things may have been OK (all fingers were crossed). OK, that was until we managed to get the whole of the wedding party over to the nearby Clare Country Park to take some photographs, at which point the heavens opened and it threw it down – we did mange to get a couple of shots before the mad rush back to the hotel.

Jo and James looked gorgeous and handsome respectively, they were great fun and a real pleasure to work with. I wish them every success and lots happiness in the years ahead.

Jo and Adam's wedding, St Gregory's church Sudbury and the White Hart Great Yeldham

I was recently involved in photographing Jo and Adam’s wedding, which I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed. They were a really lovely couple and a real pleasure to photograph. Jo looked stunning and I have to say Adam scrubbed up pretty well too.

What was quite fascinating and unique about this wedding was that Jo’s father is also the reverend for the church, revd Canon Gregory Webb, and it was he walked Jo down the isle to give her away and then switched roles and actually led the wedding ceremony.

One other thing that I find quite a fascinating coincidence is that the church, which is in Sudbury Suffolk, is called St Gregory’s and the Reverends name is also Gregory!

The wedding reception took place at The White Hart Hotel in Great Yeldham, which for those who don’t know is in north Essex and is a fantastic wedding venue (and is only a few miles from where I live).

It was a glorious day, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, the bride and groom were fantastic – a really lovely couple I congratulate them both and wish them a long and happy life together.

I have photographed a number of weddings now at St Gregory’s church and at the White Hart Hotel and they are both beautiful locations that I would be happy to photograph again and again.

Kate and Darren's Wedding - Maidens Barn Essex

I recently assisted Braintree wedding photographer, Jeff Turnbull as he photographed the wedding of Kate and Darren at the Church of Assumption in Old Harlow in Essex. This is a beautiful church and the service was simply wonderful, everyone looked fantastic and all present were treated to the incredible sounds of the London Community Gospel Choir, they really were brilliant.

Following the service a wedding reception took place at Maidens Barn, at High Easter near Chelmsford. I think this must be one of the nicest wedding venues I have been too and it provided an excellent opportunity for some great wedding photography.

It was also great for me to get out and work with Jeff again. Baby Ava May together with mum and dad - Lauren and Aaron

Last week I photographed baby Ava – May together with her mum Lauren and Dad Aaron, (who, I have to say, were very well behaved).

Ava – May is such a sweet little baby and was a great pleasure to photograph; we even got the odd smile now and then, (or was it just wind?) Lauren bought her a few changes of clothes and this helped to keep the session going and to give some additional variety to the final images.

It’s important when photographing babies to allow plenty of time, to work at a steady pace and to take plenty of breaks. Ava – May was quite hungry / thirsty on the day and we stopped four or five times whilst she drank her bottle of milk and also whilst she had a nappy change. (Did I mention that she also wee’d over Aaron!)?

At Tony Sale photography photo session can either be completed in the home studio, at the clients home or else at a nice location outside such as a park, the coast or even the zoo. Hedingham School 6th Form Leavers' Ball 2010

Last Friday evening I was fortunate enough to photograph the 6^th Form Leavers’ Ball at Hedingham School in North Essex. I had a brilliant time, it was a real joy to be there taking photographs. The students were brilliant, hair, make up, jewellery, new clothes - they all looked absolutely fantastic!

I took along my portable studio set up and it was like doing one huge fashion shoot with everyone getting involved and enjoying the opportunity and experience. There were some very good-looking people amongst those who were there and without a doubt at least 4-5 have the potential to become models.

I have received excellent feedback on the photos, with everyone saying how much they love them. Many now have them as their picture on Facebook and lots of people have ordered prints. I've also recieved a number of enquires about personal photo shoots.

Jo and James - pre wedding photo shoot

A few days ago I did a pre wedding photo shoot with Jo and James, a delightful couple, who live in Herne Hill in London. The shoot took place in a nearby park and although the weather was a bit dull and somewhat on the cold side we all had great fun and a really fantastic time.

A pre wedding photo shoot is a great opportunity for the bride and groom and the photographer to get to know each other and to get used to working with each other before the ‘big day’. It also gives the couple a chance to relax and enjoy the pleasure of being photographed in a completely stress free environment. Jo and James both said that they totally enjoyed the afternoon and that they both now felt much more at ease about being photographed on the wedding day.

In addition, Jo and James will now chose one of the photographs from the shoot to be made into a framed ‘photo board’ which will be on display at the wedding reception, all of the guests will be invited to sign the board and leave their comments and best wishes.

Jo and James you were both fantastic, I looking forward very much to photographing your wedding in August.

Rob and Emma portrait shoot

For this portrait shoot with Rob and Emma we went off in to the countryside about 8.00PM in the evening. I wanted to make the most of the late evening sun (although actually there wasn’t a lot of it) but I also wanted to add some drama to the shots with some discerning use of off camera lighting.

For the most part the off camera lighting was carefully blended with the ambient light to produce a nice soft natural effect. But at other times I allowed the off camera lighting to dominate and overpower some of the ambient light to produce what I think is a more dramatic outcome.

The whole shoot was a fun event and I think the location, combined with creative posing and lighting gave the session a very ‘fashion portrait’ type feel.

Emma and James' Wedding

I was recently involved in photographing Emma and James’ wedding, which I have to say was a real pleasure, they are a delightful couple. Emma looked stunning and James and the guys really looked the part in their kilts. James is from Scotland and actually has his own tartan.

It was great to take some photographs of James and his mates beforehand they were a great bunch of lads and were clearly up for a laugh. As I say they really looked the part in their kilts and of course boys being boys had to have their fun pulling up each other kilts, or even occasionally their own!

The ceremony took place in the quiet and secluded, ‘All saints Church’ in Rayne followed by a reception at High Barn in Great Bardfield. Although the day started off with some sunshine it unfortunately turned out quite cold and windy but of course none of that was going to ruin the day.

Sadly I can’t remember his name but one of James’ friends is a very accomplished pianist and played some fantastic pieces during the drinks reception. He really was first class.

Imperial War Museum Duxford - Spring Air Show

I recently spent a day at the ‘Spring Air Show’ at the Imperial War Museum Duxford. I haven’t been to an air show for a few years so being an ex member of the Royal Air Force I was really looking forward to the sight, sound and smells associated with turbo props, jet engines and burning aviation fuel. What’s more now I’m ‘a photographer’ and have a new Nikon camera it was a great chance to take some photo’s. (It’s all very sad I know – maybe it’s a boy’s thing)

I went to the show with a photographer friend, Joe Dormer, (who for some strange reason shoots with a Canon!) (but he did buy me lunch so I had better not say too much) It was a great day out with some excellent static displays in the morning followed by the flying display in the afternoon. Though sadly due to the ash cloud from Eyjafjallajoekull Volcano in Iceland, aircraft from RAF Coningsby were grounded and unable to make the show.

I must admit I was a bit out of practice at ‘panning’ so trying to photograph some of the aircraft streaking past at anything up to 200 – 300 MPH did prove to be rather difficult.

Anyway I had a fantastic day out and came away with what I think are some pretty good photographs, see what you think.

Gosfield Twinning Association

The village of Gosfield is twinned with the lovely French town of Chouzé Sur Loire, which is set in the heart of the beautiful Loire valley.

In alternate years members of the Gosfield Twinning Association visit friends in France for a long weekend and then the following year members of the Chouzé Twinning Association will visit Gosfield. This year it’s time for Gosfield members to visit France. Twinning associations are all about making new friends, finding out more about other countries and appreciating cultural differences. They are also great fun and you don’t even need to speak another language, a desire to be open and friendly is all that is needed!

It is traditional when either Association visits the other that they present their hosts with a special gift. It was for this reason that I was contacted David Thompson, President of the Gosfield Twinning Associations, who asked me if it would be possible to produce a photograph that would somehow represent the village. Being a resident of Gosfield I was extremely pleased and excited to undertake this challenge and immediately began to discuss some of my ideas and options. It was quickly agreed that the final image should be a montage, with a photograph of members of the Twinning Association in the centre surrounded by landmarks and buildings that represent the village.

Gosfield, if you don’t know it, is a relatively small (population 1500), but beautiful village set in rural north Essex, but when it came down to it I was surprised at just how many landmarks there were to photograph. Infact it was not possible to comfortably fit them all into the picture!

Here are a few of the photographs, which I took along the way, together with the final image, which has now been printed and framed and presented to the village of Chouzé Sur Loire.

Heather and Pat's Wedding

I was very fortunate recently to photograph Heather & Pat’s wedding, this was a civil ceremony and both the ceremony and the reception took place at the White Hart Hotel a beautiful wedding venue at Great Yeldham in North Essex.

They were a fantastic couple and were great to work with, as were the four children and indeed all of their guests. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and having a good time.

It was a beautiful sunny day which added to the great atmosphere and people were able to enjoy a nice relaxing drink out in the gardens. It was really good for me too, as the last couple of weddings I have been involved with the weather has been awful and most of the photography done indoors, which is great but it's nice to get out side too.

Halstead Easter Pageant

Hundreds of people gathered in the town of Halstead on Easter Saturday to witness the Easter pageant an annual event, which was revived last year after a short break.

The event, which was scripted by local resident, Cat Logan featured the five Stations of the Cross. Each station was acted out in a different part of the town as the procession moved from the library in Bridge Street, up the high street and on to St Andrews Church. There were at least 60 actors and helpers involved from five different churches, ‘Halstead’s Churches Together’. The event was extremely well attended and received tremendous support from the local and business community.

It was great to follow the event and to produce a photographic record for those involved. A number of the images were subsequently published by Newsquest Media Group.

In one of my earlier blogs I introduced Bo, our new puppy, a cockapoo who came to us on the 27^th December last year. In those photo’s she was very tiny and very very cute. Well three months on she is still very cute and although still small she has actually quadrupled in size.

She is also extremely active and full of mischief and fun. She races around with boundless energy and chews just about anything she can get hold of, including, shoes, bits of wood, books and anything else she can get hold of.

She is actually quite difficult to photograph because as soon as I point a camera at her she races up at a blurringly fast speed and sticks her nose on the lens. However here are a few I managed to get, see what you think:

Baby portraits - Kian 2

The last time I photographed Kian he was not feeling too well. It was shortly before Christmas, he was teething and had patches of dry red skin on his face. He was tearful, grumpy and miserable (and I think I would be too). Although, on that occasion, we did get some nice photographs I thought we could do better. So I asked mum, Abi, to bring him back in the New Year (at no extra cost), she did and on this occasion we all had a fantastic time!

Kian is much more mobile now and was crawling around everywhere, and so was I trying to keep up with him, crawling around on my hands and knees whilst focusing the camera and taking photographs! It was one of those rare days we get now when the sun was actually shinning, so as well as doing some studio photographs we also ventured out in to the garden and local park.

We got some really fantastic photographs and I managed to survive the session without any injuries, just a little mud on my elbows and knees.

It’s my belief that to get great photographs of babies and children you really do need to get down to their level and to see life as they do. It’s important to break down any barriers and for them, and me, to have fun!

How up to date are the photo’s of your children? Remember they are only young once; you won’t get chance to go back and photograph them like that at a later date. We are all busy people promising ourselves that ‘we must do it’ or ‘we will get around to it later’. But often people never do or else they take some ‘average’ low quality images with a digital camera that never escape the confines of the computer and never or rarely adorn the walls as works of art.

Hey, help is at hand, relax and let someone else do it for you, professional photography does not have to be expensive, but it could ensure you get beautiful images of your children and loved ones that you can cherish forever, leaving you to enjoy some ‘me’ time or else tackle one of the many other jobs on your list.

Grandparents & Grandchildren portrait photography

I seem to have had a run on photographing grandparents together with their grandchildren recently, here is one of my latest shoots.

Granddad, Ron didn’t want anything too fancy just a nice traditional portrait together with his wife Jean and grandchildren, Cameron and Amelia. So to keep things simple we started off with some nice straightforward studio shots based around a leather sofa. However, that was clearly too comfy so, after a short while we moved that out of the way and got everybody down on the floor. Once that became too easy, and we had yet another break in the weather we headed out for a walk around the local park. A great chance to get some fresh air, a little sunshine and some great photos

Grandma and Granddaughter portraits

I recently photographed Katie (aged 3) together with her glamorous grandma Jesse.

At the time of the shoot Katie was actually only two, but it was her 3^rd birthday 5 days later. She had never been photographed formally before and so I expected her to be a little shy / apprehensive. I therefore wanted to keep the shoot as informal and fun as I could. I had hoped for some nice weather and fortunately we had a little bit of sunshine that day, so I split the session between the studio and the local park. (By the way that sunshine was a lucky break, it’s actually snowing quite heavily again now).

As predicted Katie was a little shy to start with but with a little help from grandma, the promise of chocolate biscuits and squash and a chance to see Bo our little puppy (see earlier blog entries for pictures) she did get in to the fun of it.

Two day advanced wedding photography training

You never stop learning as a photographer. (I was going to say never stop ‘developing’ but that may have seemed a bit corny). Even though I have a degree in photography, as a professional wedding and portrait photographer it’s very important for me to continue my training. To develop and practice new skills and to experiment and practice with fresh ideas. This not only ensures I develop as a photographer (ah! 'develop' I’ve said it now) but also ensures I stay ahead of the competition and continually improve upon the service I provide to my customers.

I recently completed a two day advanced wedding course run by Braintree photographer Jeff Turnbull. (http://www.Photo-Training.co.uk/) This was a full on two days and I have to say I was pretty exhausted by the end of it, as were most of the other participants. There was a lot of very useful front loading and interactive input from Jeff, it was also extremely useful to network and share experiences with the other students. The highlight though had to be the ‘shoot’, Jeff arranged two excellent models, Nezda and Anthony and we spent a whole afternoon photographing them at a local wedding venue, Prested Hall.

I first met Pauline and John just over a year ago when they first booked me to photograph their wedding and I have met them several times since to discuss the finer details of the day. I have to say they really are a lovely down to earth fantastic couple that were a joy to work with.

Although the recent snow had cleared the weather on the day was not the best, it was cold, windy and raining. I had hopes that it would improve by the time of the wedding but alas it didn’t. Still they say it’s lucky if it rains on your wedding day (it threw it down when Kate and I got married).

The wedding itself was in St Catharine’s Church in Gosfield, which is a beautiful church and a lovely place to get married. The reception followed at the White Hart in Great Yeldham, a very prestigious venue.

The Bride and Groom, and everyone else for that matter were very relaxed and looked fantastic, see what you think.

Welcome to a new member of the family

On Sunday 27^th December we welcomed a new member of the family in to our home, her name is Bo and she is a ‘Cockapoo’. For those of you not in the know that’s a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. She was exactly seven weeks old having been born in Tollshunt Major in Essex on the 9^th November.

She seems to have settled in pretty quickly but constantly keeps us on our toes, she is so full of energy and in to absolutely everything.

But as you can see she is very cute!

Photojournalism - 45 Minute challenge

I was sitting at home a few days ago amidst the recent fall of snow when I received a call from Newsquest Media asking if there was any chance I could get some ‘nice’ snowy images for them, for use in local papers. It was great to be asked and I welcomed the chance to get out and take some photo’s; the only problem was I didn’t get the call until almost 3.00 PM and the light was beginning to fade, on top of that I was due to take my son out at 3.30 (ish). None the less I grabbed my gear and set out in earnest, I had just 45 minutes to see what I could do.

Ideally they wanted pictures with people in them, but I also thought a few local landscapes may look good. I had a quick tour of Halstead and Gosfield and managed to get quite a selection, I have shown some of them below. A total of five images were printed in the Halstead Gazette a few days later.

Baby portraits - Kian (and mum Abi)

It was my pleasure last week to take some portrait photographs of young mum Abi and her 5-month-old son Kian. Well actually most of them were of Kian but I did manage to sneak the odd shot of ‘mum’ now and then as well.

As part of the planning process I like to ensure when photographing babies or young children that they have had their latest feed and sleep prior to the shoot. With Kian It seemed we had timed it perfectly, he was well fed and rested and in fact was still sleeping on arrival. I took the first few shots whilst he was still sleeping and then a few more as he gradually awoke. Kian has fantastic big bright blue eyes and he was a delight to photograph. We got some really nice shots and Abi loved them all.

Unfortunately though Kian has just starting teething and to be fair he soon became a little grumpy and distracted, there was no way he wanted to charm us with his ‘cute’ baby smile.

That’s not a problem, these things happen and there’s not too much you or I can do about it. I will simply arrange for Abi to bring Kian along to finish the shoot on another day, at no extra cost of course.

It’s really importance to me that the photo shoot should be relaxed and enjoyable, it’s all about getting great images for you. If for whatever reason we don’t get the images you want then we can simply arrange to do another shoot on another day. This reassurance actually helps people to relax; they don’t feel self conscious or obliged to perform

Having said Kian became a bit grumpy we still got some great pics, see what you think.

Couple Portrait - Rob & Emma

I’m going to be honest here, this is one of the best looking, fun loving, intelligent and sophisticated couples I have ever photographed; but then maybe I’m slightly biased as this is my son Robert and his girlfriend Emma. Rob asked me if I would take some photographs of Emma and him, He didn’t want to pay for the privilege and he didn’t want to spend a long time doing it. He actually scored well on both points as it didn’t cost him a thing and we did the whole shoot in about 15 – 20 minutes, (although I did take time to set up the studio beforehand). They were both very impressed with the outcome and I think they are pretty cool too.

Documentary photography - Halstead Torchlight Procession

On Wednesday evening (9^th December) the annual torchlight procession and carol service was held in Halstead. This is an extremely popular event with people carrying ‘real flame’ torches from the memorial at the top of the High Street down to the public gardens where a carol service was then held. The service was led by Rev John Blore and Halstead mayor David Hume.

The night was extremely well attended with well over a 1000 people taking part. From babies and toddlers to parents and grandparents they were all there enjoying the festive spirit.

Prior to the event Halstead Town Council commissioned me to document the procession for use on their website, I was also commissioned by the Newsquest Media Group to photograph the event for images to be used in local newspapers. Ten of these images have since been used on a double page spread in the Halstead Gazette.

Paul, Lucy, Jack & Molly - Family Portraits

Once again the plan was to start in the studio and then venture out and do some cool outdoor lifestyle type shots. Once again though we were beaten by the weather. It had been fine earlier on in the morning but when we came to going out it was cold, dull and miserable, and it was pouring down.

However we had great fun in the studio and got some excellent shots. Although I always have lots of ideas about what images I want to take I always work closely with the client and think it’s important to let them influence the way the session goes, after all they know what they want. Lucy in particular was very keen to get involved and came up with some excellent ideas.

The shoot comprised of some individual shots, some brother & sister and husband & wife shots and some whole family groups shots – something to suit everyone.

Postproduction gave me a chance to stylize some of the images further and to show some of the great finishes that can be had.

Jane wanted some photos of Tabitha including some in a fairy dress for possible use on Christmas cards. So some bright high key studio shots with a white background seemed to be the ideal setting.

Although Tabitha was keen to put on her outfits she was not always so keen to step into the lime light and pose for the camera, however, a little bit of encouragement from mum and a little bit twisting, turning and laying on the floor from me seems to have done the trick and I think we have got some really beautiful photographs. Tabitha looks so sweet in all of her outfits but especially in her fairy costume.

On Sunday 8^th November I was commissioned by the Newsquest Media Group to photograph the Remembrance Parade in Halstead. The images produced were to be used in local papers within the Braintree / Halstead district.

Being an ex serviceman and having served in campaigns in both Dhofar (Oman) and Northern Ireland I am used to attending such parades and in recent years have attended in an official capacity as president of the Rotary Club of Halstead. I feel it is important that we pay due respect and take time to remember those that have given their life in the service of their country. For this reason it was also important for me to capture meaningful images which told the story and captured the emotion of the day.

Sally and Steven's Wedding - Stoke by Nayland

I was fortunate enough recently to accompany Braintree photographer Jeff Turnbull on a wedding shoot at Stoke by Nayland. The bride and groom on this occasion were Sally & Steven who were a really lovely couple and a pleasure to photograph.

Although I am a wedding photographer myself there is always something you can learn from other photographers, especially those whose images and work ethos you admire. Assisting Jeff therefore was both an education and a pleasure. I witnessed the relaxed and effective way he communicates with people and some of the very artistic and creative ways in which he combines the use of light and composition to produce some most stunning images.

Samantha & Paul's Wedding

I felt very privileged to have been recently commissioned to photograph Samantha and Paul’s wedding. They are a fantastic couple that were great fun to work with and it really was a pleasure to share this great day with them. The ceremony was a civil ceremony at The Red Lion Hotel, a very plush hotel in the beautiful Oxfordshire village of Henley on Thames.

When I set off for Henley on the morning of the wedding it was absolutely tipping down and there seemed little prospect of it clearing up. Planning for all eventualities I had wisely packed my portable lighting kit in the car and so turned my thought’s to plan ‘B’ the wet weather plan. I much prefer to shoot wedding photographs outside in natural light and will always look for a sheltered area if I can. If not then having good quality reliable kit is essential.

As it turned out luck was on our side and the rain miraculously stopped and the skies cleared about twenty minutes before the ceremony began.

Jimmy and Lori

I have photographed Jimmy on a previous occasion and he was extremely pleased with the final images. So pleased that he subsequently commissioned me to photograph him again this time together with his wife Lori.

They opted for studio shots as they like the semi formal bright clean finished look….and apart from that it was very cold and wet outside!

Jimmy and Lori and Sri Lanken and during the shoot Lori wore some traditional dress. She is wearing a ‘Sarong Kabaya’ – (photo’s with the peach sari) and also a ‘Sri Lanken – Sinhalese Redha-Huttey’ – (photo wearing red & gold).

Halstead Battle of the Bands (Sunday 18th October 2009)

This was the 5th annual Halstead Battle of the Bands event. A joint collaboration between The Rotary Club of Halstead and the Empire Theatre Trust. There were a record eight bands performing (there are usually only six) and the quality of playing and diversity in music was absoluely fantastic.

It was also great to see such a wide age range of performers as well with 'old rockers like Gerry Champion and Buster Nolan to some of the younger players such as Simon Lucas, Keenan Paige and Alex Diss who were all only 16.

The eventual winners were 'Anomaly Point' followed up by 'Another Dead Hero' and 'Drummer Hates Jazz' All of the bands said they thoroughly enjoyed the event and are looking forward to next year. Special thanks must go to The Rotary Club of Halstead and the Empire Theatre for such a well organised event and to the judges, Pat Saward, Phil Ockelford, Lyndon Holland and Fergus Jones for taking on such a difficult task and finally agreeing on such a worthy winner.

I recently had a series of portrait photographs taken by renowned Braintree photographer Jeff Turnbull. Jeff is a great photographer, I have assisted him on a number of occasions and I genuinely admire his work. Daniel & Corrina are brother and sister and wanted some nice photographs together as a birthday presents for their mum. They specifically wanted them to be done in the studio rather than an outdoor environmental portraits, and the shoot took place on Saturday morning the 3^rd October.

Wedding Photography Braintree, Stuart & Anna's wedding

On Saturday 26^th September I photographed Stuart and Anna’s wedding at Braintree in Essex. They were married at the Registry Office in John Ray House and held the reception in the village hall at Shalford, which is set in beautiful surroundings.

I had only met the couple a few weeks beforehand, they were both very charming and a delight to work with. Anna originates from Poland and they had recently returned from a holiday there and Stuart is due to begin a career in the Royal Air Force in a few weeks time. Having spent nine years in the RAF myself Stuart and I seemed to hit it off pretty well.

It was a delight to photograph their wedding and I wish them both lots and lots of success and happiness in their life ahead together.

Dave and his Harley

As I have only just started my blog and am keen to get some photo's up here I thought I would show some images from my last three shoots. This one I have called, 'Dave and his Harley'. I had previously done some family portrait photographs of Dave together with his wife and young son. After the shoot and whilst showing them my portfolio Dave saw a photo I had taken of a biker posing with his motorcycle, as soon as he saw it Dave said, 'that's it I want some pictures like that'. The shoot went ahead about a week later.

Hi, welcome, this is my first entry onto my very first blog. (exciting). I am a photographer living in Gosfield, North essex. I love taking photographs and shoot pretty much anything, but specialise in wedding and portrait photography. I hope to use my blog to showcase some of my on going work and as a kind of diary to report on anything interesting I have been up to, which does happen occasionally.

I am also a husband to my gorgeous wife Kate and father to my two brilliant sons Rob and Nick.
